Letter to the Editor: Reigstad running for Common Council

The following is a letter to the editor published in the Jan. 10, 2025, edition of the Fitchburg Star.

Hello, neighbors!

My name is Logan Reigstad, and I’m running to represent District 3 on the Fitchburg Common Council.

I’m an experienced communicator with a passion for service, and I want to be your advocate at City Hall.

Currently, I have the honor of serving on the Fitchburg Transportation and Transit Commission and as the secretary of my condo board. Previously, I worked as a journalist in newsrooms covering five states. I spent the better part of a decade holding the powerful accountable and shining a spotlight on the obstacles communities of all sizes face – now, I’m running for city council to shape the solutions.

Our city is growing fast, and further growth is both inevitable and welcome. More and more people are seeing what makes Fitchburg a special place to live, work, and play. Yet as our city grows, it is becoming increasingly unaffordable. I saw this myself when I moved home to my native Dane County in 2021 and only found an apartment I could afford by luck.

A few months later, I bought my first condo in District 3, but a couple of years later, housing prices have risen so fast that I may not be able to make that same purchase today. People who work in Fitchburg and contribute to our community should be able to afford to live here; we can help make that a reality by requiring developers who receive city support for developments to make a percentage of units truly affordable and using resources earmarked for affordable housing to support homeownership opportunities.

Stable housing is a key component of a strong community. Another crucial element is feeling connected to and informed about what’s happening around us. As your alderperson, I’ll use the skills I honed as a journalist to demystify what’s happening at City Hall so you know how your government is working on your behalf – and how you can make your voice heard.

With so much changing, now more than ever we need a collaborative, next-generation leader on the Common Council who embodies the transformation our district has seen in recent years.
